Overview
Designed film promotion materials for Rosenstrasse, a historical drama set in wartime Berlin, depicting the true story of women who publicly protested against the Nazi regime to save their Jewish husbands.
The project spanned two distinct markets: the United Kingdom and Japan. For the UK, both portrait and landscape key art were created for outdoor advertising. For Japan, three deliverables were produced: a main visual poster, a detail-rich flyer, and an advance screening ticket.
PROCESS
Interviews were conducted with five film distributors and graphic designers from Japan and the UK. The findings revealed that Japanese posters emphasise famous actors and detailed text, while Western posters focus on minimalism and strong visuals for immediate impact. To align with each market, mood boards were also created to guide the design process.
UK POSTER
The poster is designed for a drama-loving audience aged 45 and older. A prominent Nazi flag sets the historical context, with the main character superimposed to symbolise resistance. Below the title, images of anxious women and children add emotional depth and intrigue. The design ensures the film’s narrative is instantly recognisable.
JAPANESE POSTER
The Japanese poster depicts Charlotte awaiting her husband’s return, symbolising feminine strength and resilience. Rather than a typical Nazi war drama, it subtly hints at women-led miracles. Key text highlights the Rosenstrasse protests as a rare act of female resistance, balancing the tense imagery of SS officers confronting defiant women.
